Why Pharmacy Phones Are Broken — And How AI Is Fixing Them

Every independent pharmacy in the UK shares a version of the same story.

It's a Tuesday morning. The dispenser is halfway through a complex MDS tray. The phone rings. A patient wants to know what time you close on Saturday. The dispenser puts down the blister pack, walks to the counter, answers the question — thirty seconds of their clinical focus evaporated.

The problem is structural, not personal. Independent pharmacies are running lean teams. There is no receptionist. There is no dedicated call-handler. The person answering the phone is the same person dispensing your medication.

Why traditional solutions haven't worked

Voicemail is the obvious fix, but patients don't leave messages — they call back, often repeatedly. Answerphone messages describing opening hours help, but only if callers stay on the line long enough to hear them.

The pharmacies seeing the greatest benefit from AI communication tools tend to share a few characteristics: they're in high-footfall areas with consistent inbound call volume, they're running lean on headcount, and they've already tried the alternatives.
